What summer BBQ would be complete without a big, juicy watermelon? You likely even had watermelon at your Fourth of July festivities. There’s nothing quite as refreshing as biting into a cool, juicy watermelon on a hot summer day.

Would you be surprised to know that watermelon is 92 percent water and is rich in electrolytes including potassium? This makes watermelon not only a great addition to any BBQ but also a great pre or post workout food – add some BCAA’s sprinkled on top and you have a delicious, functional snack to replenish your body after an intense workout or even just a hot day.

 

Having trouble picking out a watermelon? Try these tips to ensure you get a delicious watermelon every time.

  1. Pick up and feel the weight of the watermelon – regardless of whether it is a small or large melon it should feel heavy for it’s size.
  2. Knock on the watermelon – tap underneath the watermelon. It should have a hollow, deep sound indicated it’s full of water. If it’s under or even over ripe it will sound dull instead of deep.
  3. Pick rounder melons which are usually sweeter than elongated ones.
  4. Look for a yellow spot on the bottom of the watermelon. This is from where the melon sits on the ground. If it has a dark creamy yellow spot, it’s ripe.
  5. Look for webbing – these are web-like brown spots that occur from when bees pollinated the flowers multiple times. The more webbing, the sweeter the melon.
  6. Lastly, if the melon still has a stem attached, it should be dried up which indicates it’s ripe. If the stem is still fresh, the watermelon may have been picked too early.

  • 4 c seedless watermelon, cut into bite sized chunks

  • 4 c seedless watermelon, cut up into bite sized pieces
  • 1/2 scoop IdealLean BCAA's any flavor (We like Raspberry Lemonade or Blueberry Pomegranate the best but you can use whichever flavor you want!)
